2000 vintage report for McLaren Vale (South Australia)

David Dean, general manager of McLaren Vale Winemakers, said it had been another difficult year for the region. ‘But it was one where good vineyard management and a settling of the weather towards the end will result in a very good year ,’ he added. Vintage started on 10 February, which was early for the area. Yields were down 25-45% on last year, depending on variety. David said the reasons included a dry winter, late spring rains, poor flowering and variable set. Weather during vintage was hot, then moderate and some growers encountered some downy mildew. David said the 2000 wines appear ‘elegant rather than full-bodied.’ ‘The reds are good to excellent, depending on variety. Cabernet appears to be the best; Shiraz that “held on” is good, Grenache was disappointing for some,’ he said. He described the whites as very good to outstanding. ‘The flavour appears to be exceptional.’
