2000 vintage report for King Valley (Victoria)

In the King Valley yield was down by 20-30% across most varieties, with Shiraz having the greatest decrease. No one reason can be given for this, said David Maples of the region’s Grapegrowers Association. Chardonnay and Riesling suffered from some sun damage that influenced yields.David said 85% of the vintage was successfully harvested before mid April rains arrived. Botrytis was an issue late in the season but in general there were no major problems. ‘Excellent quality fruit has been reported by most wineries which sourced from this area as the extreme heat suffered by other areas didn’t impact as hard in alpine areas,’ David said. Some excellent parcels of Merlot and Shiraz have been reported. Most reds harvested before mid April have been of good quality. The reds from later in the season are just average. David said ‘good to very good’ quality for whites seemed to be the main comment from most winemakers. All processing went very smoothly because of new crushing and storage capacity provided by contract processing and winemaking facilities in the valley.
