2000 vintage report for Great Southern (Western Australia)

Angelo Diletti, president of the Great Southern Wine Producers’ Association, reports average yields from the region. Wet weather during March and early April brought high pressure on control of fungal diseases, especially botrytis, and also delayed ripening. Angelo said it had generally been a good year, despite the wet summer and difficulties due to weather during vintage. The quality of reds was variable, with some excellent reds and some lighter wines resulting. Jerry Stoops, president of the Denmark Vignerons Club, said yields in the Denmark area of Great Southern were down by as much as 50%, because of many rain events during vintage and resulting ‘rampant’ botrytis. ‘Early varieties like Riesling were OK, but the quality of everything after that suffered,’ Jerry said.
