2000 vintage report for Eden Valley (South Australia)

The 2000 vintage in the Barossa (Barossa Valley and Eden Valley) has been ‘challenging and intriguing,’ according to Barossa Winemakers chairman, Brian Walsh. He said that like most other SA regions poor fruitset and the culmination of several dry winters had reduced average yields by as much as 40%. ‘Some varieties such as Grenache, Chardonnay and Semillon have been closer to average cropping levels, but most of us can’t remember a time when Shiraz has been so affected by seasonal conditions. It’s a pretty unstoppable grape variety but this year yields were down significantly, especially on old vines,’ he said. Brian said he believed that lower yields would be compensated for by very good quality wines. ‘The best Shiraz and Cabernet is looking outstanding and there are also some fantastic Semillons,’ Brian said. ‘It’s been a vintage of surprises and challenges but quality will be good — by June we should be able to make a more accurate assessment.’ He said grape prices had stabilised this vintage, with only a few varieties increasing in value.
