2000 vintage report for Cowra (New South Wales)

Peter Fagan, president of the Cowra Region Vineyard Association, said the 2000 whites in the region fared better than the reds. Spring and early summer in the region were cool, with only short periods of hot weather in January and a mild February and early March. Rain, warm temperatures and humidity later in March caused development of botrytis. Whites generally escaped problems, but reds were badly affected. ‘White yields were down on the 1999 vintage, but only slightly down on the long term average,’ Peter said. ‘The drop in yield ranged between 25 and 50% for different varieties.’ Peter said white fruit was excellent, some it the best ever. Disease was low to non-existent and fruit had good flavour at lower Baumes than normal. Reds were difficult to ripen and had some botrytis problems.
