2000 vintage report for Blackwood Valley (Western Australia)

In the Blackwood Valley yields were average, but down by 20% on last year’s above-average yield. Vintage started on 28 February, which was early for the region. Brian Walker of the Blackwood Valley Wine Industry Association said there had been minimal losses from birds and disease. Weather during vintage had been dry except for 25 mm of rain on 10-12 March. Brian described the quality of the 2000 reds as ‘very high,’ from ripe, low yield fruit. Baume, pH and TA were all at optimum levels. Growers achieved substantial bonuses for their fruit, with zero deductions for faults. ‘Whites are very good, although not quite as outstanding as the reds.’ Brian said two local growers had purchased a machine harvester for the 2000 vintage. ‘This helped a lot but there could be problems in 2001 as even more vineyards come on stream,’ he said.
