2000 vintage report for Bendigo (Victoria)

The Bendigo district experienced a very long vintage, stretching from early March to late May. Wes Vine, president of the Bendigo and District Wine Growers’ Association, said good spring rains encouraged vines to set more bunches than in an average year, leading to a 4% increase in yield over 1999. Weather during vintage was generally dry, with some periods of rain and high humidity in February. Powdery mildew was more evident that usual and there was also splitting in some white varieties with subsequent botrytis infection in some vineyards. Wes said generally the fruit was of a very high quality, red varieties in particular. ‘Red wine quality could rank with the very top years,’ he said. He described white quality as ‘average.’
