1999 vintage report for Far South Western Victoria

Peter Dixon, secretary of Far South West Victoria’s Viticultural Association, said it had been a relatively dry season with a low incidence of disease. Yield decreased by about 20% on last year, due to the low rainfall and a late frost in October which affected some vineyards to varying degrees. ‘Overall a very good vintage,’ said Peter. ‘Indications are for excellent quality. Winemakers are pleased with the quality of the red fruit provided and this should result in excellent red wines.’ He said sparkling varieties were harvested on time, with good acid balance. There should be some excellent late harvest wines from varieties affected by botrytis. Peter said some vineyards experienced problems with birds, particularly wattle birds, and a high percentage of growers are now netting vines.
