Wine Production

The Winemakers' Federation of Australia reported that an estimated 1,202 ML of beverage wine was produced by winemakers during 2013-14 (see table below). This beverage wine production figure was 2.4% less than ABS's estimate for 2012-13 but more than the eight-year average of 1,167 ML by around 35 ML.

The estimated 2014 beverage wine production decreased at a lower rate than the crush estimate (-2% vs -7%) suggesting an increase in extraction rates (litres per tonne). The implied 2014 extraction rate of 708 litres per tonne is marginally higher than the 8-year average of 700 litres per tonne.

The 2013-14 WFA wine production data does not include a breakdown by type or State so we must look at the 2012-13 ABS data. Red/rosť (unfortified) wine made up 658 ML (54%) of the estimated unfortified wine produced in 2012-13 (see table below). White (unfortified) wine accounted for 561 ML or 46% of all unfortified wine production. South Australia accounted for 45% of all unfortified wine produced in 2012-13.
