Wine Consumption

Consumption of wine in Australia continues to decline on a per capita basis, according to the latest estimates from the ABS (Apparent Consumption of Alcohol, Australia 2013-14, cat. no. 4307.0.55.001) (See table below). Annual wine consumption per capita was estimated at 28.73 L/person in 2013-14, down 1.3% from 29.12 L/person in 2012-13. Consumption has now fallen by 5.7% since the 2009-10 record of 30.48 L/person.

Consumption of both white and red wines decreased in the latest survey to 14.24 L/person and 10.08 L/person respectively, while consumption of other wines was almost steady at 4.41 L/person. By comparison, per capita beer consumption declined by 0.8% to 92.37 L/person in 2013-14.

While per capita consumption eased, population growth meant overall wine consumption in Australia grew slightly, up from 541.1 ML in 2012-13 to 543.3 ML in 2013-14 (See table below). White wine and other wine both recorded increases (up 1.3% and 2.0% respectively), while red wine decreased by 1.4%.
