Established in 2003, BackVintage Wines Australia is one of the country's fastest-growing independent, internet-based, retail wineries. Founded by Julian Todd, BackVintage does not have a vineyard but buys wine throughout Australia and New Zealand for blending, bottling and labeling under the BackVintage® brand. The BackVintage brand is the only range of wine in Australia that is independently selected and endorsed by the highly regarded Nick Bulleid - Australia's 3rd Master of Wine, and international and Australian wine judge.

ComOps, with 35 years in the IT industry, sells and supports its own software solutions in the Enterprise Resource Management (EPR), Business Intelligence, Sales Force Automation, e-Commerce and Retail solutions markets.

Grapegrower & Winemaker: What are ERP and BMS systems?
Richard Bradley: ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Planning and is business software that helps you manage every aspect of your company. ComOps BMS is a Business Management Solution, allowing you to manage your customer relationships, inventory and financials all from the one real-time solution. BMS enables an organisation to manage and plan all facets of the business, such as customer relationships, inventory control, purchasing, cash collection and financial reporting. Ideally suited for small to medium enterprises that need a solution to manage their business now and grow with them into the future.

GW: Why was this solution the best one for BackVintage wines?
RB: BackVintage was looking to replace its existing basic programs, it needed to integrate onto one platform, it needed a CRM database to help it track and manage customers more efficiently and effectively, and most importantly it needed to ensure it could resourcefully manage its greatest investment: its inventory. ComOps BMS allowed BackVintage to replace all existing programs with a solution that is much more efficient and will give greater visibility into the business. Our experience in the wine industry as well as the specific wine industry functionality, such as WET capabilities, that are standard within ComOps BMS meant that it was a great fit for BackVintage.

GW: Would it be a solution that would suit only virtual wineries, or could this also suit all SME wine operations?
RB: ComOps BMS will suit most wine operations. Calais Estate Winery for example is also managing its business with ComOps BMS. The solution can be implemented in the SME but can also scale up and grow with the company so larger organisations will not outgrow the solution.

GW: What technology is required to build capacity for this solution in a small winery?
RB: There are different models that can be used to suit different companies. We have the capability to host the solution so that small wineries do not need any IT expertise so there is no need for any experts if that is the chosen model.

GW: What does ComOps believe is a reasonable investment for a SME wine company to make in an IT solution?
RB: Wineries make huge investments in inventory and a system that allows them to protect this investment is business-critical. An average ComOps BMS installation for an SME wine operation would cost less than a typical tank of wine for most wineries and the system will allow them to manage their customers, inventory and business as well as improve efficiencies and give a platform to enable and enhance growth.
