Zork will demonstrate new EAS closure at WineTech 07

Zork will demonstrate a new closure that incorporates electronic article surveillance (EAS) technology on Stand 303 during WineTech.

ZORK developed the new closure, which is said to be user friendly and convenient, to help retailers combat shoplifting. The company is giving Australian wine producers the opportunity to be amongst the first in the world to fight shoplifting using this new closure.

The closure features a radio frequency security tag that is placed in the hollow plunger of the existing closure. The device will activate when the shoplifter passes through electronic sensors at the exits and a loud beeping noise will occur alerting shopkeepers of the theft. When the product is scanned it breaks the circuit within the security tag — preventing it from activating unnecessarily.

Zork was approached by Checkpoint Systems to develop a solution for theft in the wine and spirits industry. Established in 1969, Checkpoint today is said to be the world's leading provider of radio frequency (RF) based loss prevention systems to the $1 trillion global retail industry.

Shoplifting is a big problem for retailers. In the US, for example, losses due to shoplifting total over $13 billion annually. Wine and other alcoholic drinks represent a significant proportion of that figure.

According to the National Supermarket Research Group, shops with EAS have 126% more shoplifter apprehensions than non-EAS stores.

“There are other devices that aim to prevent theft that are seen more on UK shelves, although they have to be attached by the store, and are generally reserved for the premium products,” said ZORK Technical Director John Brooks.

“This is a solution that requires no additional labour for the retailer and enables the producer to install a discreet security device that doesn’t disrupt the harmony of their packaging and is practical for use on wine at all price points.”
