Australia’s leading wine industry publisher, Winetitles, is proud to announce the release of the inaugural Australian Wine Grape Growers’ Directory, developed in consultation with Wine Grape Growers’ Australia (WGGA), the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia (WFA) and vineyard software developer, VineAccess.
Winetitles has for 25 years produced the award-winning Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Directory, an invaluable tool for the wine industry, and in time, Winetitles believes the Growers’ Directory could grow to be held in the same esteem in Australia, and internationally.
A total of 676 growers released information about their plantings, varieties and regions to the inaugural Australian Wine Grape Growers’ Directory. Of these, the majority of growers were from South Australia (215 or 31.8%).
The growers in this year’s Directory represented 16,932ha of planted vines – about 10% of the current total area under vines in Australia of 168,791ha, according to information in The 2007 Australian and New Zealand Wine Industry Directory.
The bulk of fruit sold by growers contributing to the Directory was sold under contract (41%) with 31% selling fruit for internal use into their own wines and 26% of fruit sold on the spot market.
“Winetitles has aimed to produce a transparent resource for all grapegrowers; one which will assist in future planting decisions; provide an avenue for winemakers to source fruit for their specifications; and set the groundwork to establish what may in time become a national database of grapegrower plantings,” said Winetitles general manager, Anita Donaldson.
“In addition to detailed grower listings with information about the hectares planted and varieties they produce, this new Directory contains a calendar of viticulture events and a comprehensive Buyers’ Guide for grapegrowers. A budget template lays out a guide to a vineyard’s financial-year costs, along with information from McLaren Vale consultant, Tony Hoare, about the best ways to minimise costs and maximise efficiency for Australian grapegrowers.”
“We hope the grapegrowing industry finds the Directory a valuable tool for their business.
And of course, Winetitles encourages all growers who were not part of this historic first edition, to contact us for listing information for 2008. Email ">g for listing forms,” she said.
The new Directory is being launched with the May/June issue of Australian Viticulture with subscribers receiving a free copy.
If you are not a subscriber to Australian Viticulture and you wish to order a copy of the Directory contact Winetitles on (08) 8292 0888 or email ">i. The Directory is available for purchase for A$25.30 in Australia (all prices include GST and postage). Stocks are strictly limited!
Editor’s note: Winetitles notes industry estimates of the number of growers in Australia vary between 7000 and 8000.
