Boost for Rutherglen region

Rutherglen winery, Cofield Wines, recently received notice of a Federal Grant Approval for their Rutherglen Sparkling Wine Tourism Project, which is anticipated will be a major boost for the Rutherglen region.

The sparkling wine market is seeing huge growth in Australia and this project will further leverage the Rutherglen region’s potential by allowing an expansion into sparkling wines. “We are so excited about this project.” said Damien Cofield.

“It will assist our wine region to achieve the benefits from the sparkling wine market growth and hopefully help boost tourism to the region as well.”

The Rutherglen region has a strong tourism industry; supported by the wine industry, the quality of regional produce and other attractions. The Cofield Rutherglen Sparkling project aims to provide another key attraction that can further cement the region as a preferred tourism destination.

Research shows that wine tourists are interested in the whole wine experience, including learning about the processes as well as tasting the wine. (Food & Wine Tourism Qualitative Research Study, Tourism Victoria 2006) Cofield’s anticipate that the project will provide an added attraction by offering an educational experience that enables visitors to view the Sparkling wine production in progress. It is hoped that this will assist in reinvigorating interest and visitation to the Rutherglen region.

A large proportion of the Rutherglen region’s economy is based upon tourism and the wineries are one of the major attractions for visitors. This project is expected to generate employment within other local wineries and in tourism related activities, as a result of increased product demand and visitation to the area.

The Rutherglen Sparkling Wine Tourism Project will involve the purchase and installation of new equipment that will be used in the final stages of Cofield Wines sparkling wine production and will value-add existing products, while creating new products and facilitating the establishment of new markets.
