Living Legends of the Hunter Valley are set to be recognised by their peers, as part of an exciting new initiative set up by the Hunter Valley wine industry. The first inductees will be announced when the industry gathers at the inaugural Hunter Valley Legends Dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley on Tuesday 5 June 2007 Four initial 'Legends' will be selected from those who have worked for a minimum of 30 years in the Hunter Valley, and made a significant contribution to the welfare of the Hunter Valley wine industry. The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest winemaking region and these legends will all have played an important part in the growth and development of the Hunter Valley wine industry. Other awards on the night will recognise ‘Winemaker of the Year’, ‘Hunter Valley Rising Star of the Year’, ‘Vineyard of the Year’ and ‘Cellar Door of the Year’. The dinner will also conclude the Hunter Harvest Celebrations to be held throughout Hunter Valley wine country in May. Industry nominations have presented well-known names from the likes of McWilliams, Tyrrells, Lindemans, Draytons and McGuigans. However industry judging panel representative Iain Riggs added, “there are also many very worthy names appearing who are unsung heroes of our industry’s evolution, which is sure to make our role as judges difficult". Fellow judge Pat Auld added, “The Hunter Valley wine industry is the success story it is today due to the passion, hard work and commitment of industry stalwarts. These people have been fundamental to the development of Hunter vineyards and their iconic wines”. Riggs, Auld and John Drayton each head Hunter Valley industry groups, and will be joined on the judging panel by respected wine writer Huon Hooke and Deeta Colvin (Director of Corporate Relations and Events – PBL Media). Legends names will be etched on an honour board, which will be displayed at the Hunter Valley Visitors Centre following the presentation. The Hunter Valley Legends Dinner will be held Tuesday 5 June at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley.
