Industry leader Jock Harvey was recently appointed as Chair of the McLaren Vale Grape, Wine and Tourism Association – marking the beginning of a new era for the region.
Executive Officer Sandie Holmes congratulated the trained agricultural scientist and Chalk Hill winemaker on his appointment.
“Jock will be a great addition to the Association’s leadership team. His incredible knowledge of McLaren Vale and his drive to promote the region as Australia’s best means the next 12 months will be very exciting,” Sandie said.
Jock grew up on a local farm before undertaking a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Adelaide Waite Campus.
“My scientific background puts me in a fortunate position where I can deal with environmental issues and offer my knowledge when it comes to developing policies and plans that deliver tangible environmental outcomes, such as achieving carbon neutrality,” he said.
Jock will focus on a range of issues including environmental sustainability, succession planning and develop a range of targeted tourism packages for international and Australian visitors.
Sandie also welcomed new Vice Chair Toby Bekkers, senior viticulturist at Paxton.
“It’s fantastic that our team is made up of such a passionate new generation of regional leaders,” Sandie said.
She thanked outgoing Chair, Reg Wymond, for his considerable contribution over the last four years.
“Reg Wymond has contributed significantly to the growth of the Association. His vast experience in the wine industry was essential in leading the organisation through its rapid development.
“We are extremely happy that Reg will continue to contribute as part of the Board,” Sandie said.
