Geelong Wine Show Awards Presented

The best wines of the Geelong region were toasted at the gala presentation ceremony of the Geelong Wine Show on Saturday 14th October.

Bellbrae Estate were the big winner on the night, taking out the 'Wine of the Show' trophy with their yet to be released 2005 Longboard Shiraz.

The awards celebrate the entire breadth of the Geelong Wine Region with all industry players, large and small, having the opportunity to showcase their talent and product.

The Bellbrae Estate mantelpiece will be full after the weekends proceedings, achieving two gold medals and five bronze in other wine classes to accompany their 'Best Shiraz' and 'Wine of the Show' trophies for the Longboard Shiraz.

Matthew di Sciascio, Director and Winemaker at Bellbrae Estate was thrilled with the result — "2005 was a great year for us, my daughter Lulu was born during harvest, and our grapes produced one of the finest vintages we have enjoyed so far. This award justifies our decision to plant Shiraz on our beloved Surf Coast."

The judging panel included James Halliday, international wine judge and wine writer; Christian Maier, one of Australia's most awarded Sommeliers and Tim Kirk, Clonakilla winemaker and master of the Shiraz — Viognier blend in the country.

The judges were impressed with the number of entries presented in each class, and the high standard of entries resulted in a greater number of medals awarded in each class compared to previous years.

Other award winners on the night included trophies for the 'Best Chardonnay' to Lethbridge 2004 Allegra Chardonnay, 'Best Pinot Noir' to Brown Magpie 2004 Pinot Noir, 'Best classic/alternative Variety Wine' to Pettavel 2006 Late Harvest Riesling. Barrgowan 2005 Simonsens Shiraz won the 'Peoples Choice Award' voted on by the general public at the preview tasting on the previous night at the Wharf Shed.

Many of the winning wines will be featured at Geelong Winegrowers Association 'Toast to the Coast' — cellar door experiences at various vineyards in the region on Saturday 28th October and the regional food and wine showcase at Deakin University Waterfront Campus on Sunday 29th October.
