An international Gold medal and three silver medals are part of a rich harvest for Queensland winemaker Kominos Wines at the New Zealand International Wine Show held in Auckland last week.
Wines from the granite belt winery's 21st vintage have achieved gold ,silver and bronze medals at one of the most intensively judged southern hemisphere wine shows . 26 wine judges including 4 master of wines employed double team judging to ensure only top wines suceeded in making it through. Two teams of three judges ajudicated on every gold and silver medal awarded. www.nziws.co.nz
The 2005 winemakers reserve Merlot was one of just 3 Merlots to achieve gold status in a show of 2104 wines entered in the show ."We are very excited to achieve this result in such a vigorously judged show."said Mary Comino.
"We are just ecstatic with this result," said winemaker Tony Comino. After 21 years our vines have achieved the necessary maturity to impart intense flavours that enable them to compete internationally and focus attention on Kominos Wines and the granite belt's true potential.
While many of the wines are destined for an export market in Taiwan developed over the last 10 years by Kominos Wines all the wines are available cellar door and at our new website www.kominoswines.com , said Mary
Kominos Wines entered wine from its 2005 Winemaker reserve series and Estate series. All winning wines were grown and made and bottled by the winery from the winery,s 30 acres of vineyards at Glen Aplin on the Granite Belt.
" It is a great result for us , vindicating the effort to grow and make these wines ourselves," Tony stated, particularly because in 2006 ,The 2005 winemaker's reserve Merlot or 2005 Estate Merlot have been in the top three Melot wines entered by Australian wineries at Cairns Show ,in the Commercial Merlots at the RNA and now at the International Wine Show in New Zealand."said Tony Comino.
"Merlot is our signature wine — a fact highlighted in James Halliday's 2007 Wine Atlas recently reviewed in the Courier Mail,"said Tony.
"This builds on our 1998 Merlot which In 1999 won Champion Red wine at the Australian Smallwinemaker's Show"
