The Barossa Vintage Festival is Australia’s foremost wine festival that celebrates the Barossa’s wine, food and heritage. Over 1000 volunteers combine their efforts to stage over 100 events. The Young Ambassadors for Barossa Award will be held in conjunction with the 2007 Barossa Vintage Festival (April 7–15), and aims to develop skills, provide mentoring and reward excellence in the young adults who have an interest in promoting the Barossa’s wine tourism industry. In 2005, the Young Ambassador for Barossa Award was honoured with an SA Great Regional Award for contribution to the development of Youth.
The Award offers 12 young adults, who may not have previously had the skills or support, the opportunity to be sponsored and trained to actively participate in hosting and promoting the 2007 Barossa Vintage Festival. From this budding dozen, one young adult will be awarded the distinction of being the Young Ambassador during the two-year period from the 2007 to 2009 event.
This program gives young adults the opportunity to undertake self-development within their local community. The program aims to foster pride in the Barossa so that participants will seek opportunities to remain in the region and contribute to its economic and social well-being. It also aims to identify and raise the profile of potential future community leaders and Vintage Festival event conveners.
During the Festival week the twelve will become official Young Ambassadors and participate in hosting and promoting events. On the final weekend of the Festival, one of the Young Ambassadors will be awarded the Young Ambassador for the Barossa Award, and will receive an international travel prize valued at $5,000.
The Committee encourages employers (both in the wine and tourism industry and in other businesses), community groups, churches, schools, youth organizations and service clubs to make nominations. Interested young people may also self nominate with the appropriate references.
Nominations must be received at the Vintage Festival office/ Barossa Visitor Information Centre, 66–68 Murray Street, Tanunda, by Friday 29 September 2006. Emailed and faxed nominations will not be accepted.
