Barbara Hardy named South Australia’s leading social entrepreneur

Barbara Hardy AO, leading community worker for environment and science and founder of the Nature Foundation SA, has been named South Australia’s Social Entrepreneur Of The Year at last week's South Australian 2006 Entrepreneur Of The Year awards. Barbara joins other regional Entrepreneur Of The Year winners nationwide who will be considered for the ultimate title Australian Entrepreneur Of The Year 2006.

Tony Smith, Managing Partner of Ernst & Young in Adelaide, said:

“Barbara is the epitome of a social entrepreneur. Her energy and foresight to seek change sets her apart from others. The Nature Foundation has taken an innovative approach to the environmental projects undertaken, and Barbara's commitment to each cause is outstanding. It is made all the more remarkable because it is not her 'job' to do this, rather her passionate belief that we can all make a difference.”

A tireless campaigner in environmental matters, Barbara Hardy launched onto the scene as a science graduate and has been a formidable proponent of nature-based issues throughout her career. Having been involved in founding Nature Foundation SA Inc., her efforts have assured that significant bushland has been preserved for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations. Her expertise has also been deployed by governments both in Australia and overseas. Her environmental principles extend to her personal lifestyle, with her own home equipped to produce its own domestic energy needs from solar energy, and any excess is fed into the national grid.

Barbara Hardy said “I strongly believe that if all people thought hard about how they use the natural resources of our precious earth, such as water, energy and soil, as well as native plants and animals, they would realize the importance of being very careful to use them sustainably. Nature Foundation raises funds from the community to help purchase native bushland with its important ecosystems, as well as supporting research into many vitally important environmental issues.

An Officer of the Order of Australia for service to conservation and the community; a former South Australian of the Year; and a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from Flinders University, Barbara is currently most heavily engaged on her fundraising role for Nature Foundation SA Inc.
