Last Monday night in London, family-owned Nugan Estate collected the prestigious Trophy for the Best International Sweet Wine Under ₤10 for its 2005 Cookoothama Botrytis Semillon at the 2006 Decanter World Wine Awards.
Having already picked up the Trophy for Best Regional Australian Sweet Wine under ₤10, Cookoothama was then pitted against all the other Regional Trophy winners in the world to collect the ultimate accolade – Trophy for Best International Sweet Wine under ₤10.
What an achievement for Australia and the Riverina.
An ecstatic chief winemaker, Daren Owers, commented:
“This Trophy is an amazing achievement! It’s an endorsement of what we believe at Nugan Estate – the Riverina truly deserves a position on the world stage as a premium producer of dessert wine. We hope the Cookoothama Botrytis Semillon will become a benchmark of its style. I am extremely proud of our whole team.”
In its third year, The Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the largest international competitions with more than 6,000 entries. It is also one of the most revered, boasting a panel of highly respected, international judges, including Australia’s own Michael Hill Smith MW. The Awards, held at the Natural History Museum, were presented by Chairman Steven Spurrier:
“By judging on comparative quality first regionally, then internationally, in panels of three and flights of no more than ten wines, with specialist judges present throughout, the results of the Decanter World Wine Awards will have complete validity for both the consumer and the producer.”
