Mount Benson is a rural community located on the Southern Ports Highway halfway between Kingston and Robe on the south east coast of South Australia. In the mid-1800’s wool production and the harvesting of wattle bark destined for tanneries in Melbourne, Adelaide and the UK were the main economic activities.
In 1989 a new important industry was created in the region with the first planting of a commercial vineyard by Bill and Margaret Wehl. Since this first planting of Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the terra rossa soils of Mount Benson, the area has seen a strong growth in viticulture, wine production and wine tourism and now has over 600 hectares under vine, three wineries and seven cellar doors offering the best of the region’s wines and hospitality.
With funding support from the Federal Government through its Regional Partnership Program, the South Australian Government with a Tourism Development Grant and the many generous contributions in cash and ‘in kind’ from regional businesses and the community, the Hall and surrounds have been updated into a modern, multi-purpose venue designed to meet both community and wine tourism needs.
The Centre will host Cellar Door Tasting and Sales facilities for two Mount Benson wine labels, Cape Thomas Wines and Guichen Bay Vineyards, operating seven days a week during the November to April period and six days a week for the remainder of the year. In addition to presenting a range of the region’s fine red and white wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sparkling Shiraz, a range of local produce and merchandise will also be available.
The formal opening of the Centre in front of an expected two hundred invited guests will be performed on Sunday, 27th August at 12.15pm by the local Federal Member the Hon. Patrick Secker MHR on behalf of the Hon. Warren Truss, Federal Minister Transport and Regional Services with support from the Hon. Rory McEwen MP, State Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forest and Chairman of The South Australian Wine Industry Council, representing the Hon. Dr. Jane Lomax-Smith, Minister for Tourism in South Australia.
