A chardonnay from Gunn Estate has been awarded a Gold medal at the prestigious Chardonnay of the World competition in France.
The 2004 Gunn Estate Skeetfield Chardonnay was the only New Zealand wine awarded a gold medal at the 13th annual Chardonnay du Monde (Chardonnay of the World) wine competition (9–12 March).
Held at Château des Ravatys, the wine estate of the Pasteur Institute at Saint-Lager in the Burgundy wine region of France, the Chardonnay du Monde competition is truly international in scope, with more than 35 countries and 900 wine samples involved.
Winemaker Denis Gunn said it is a joy to create a wine that stands up as one of the best against the strongest international competition possible.
"What wonderful news to get on the day we bottle the 2005 Skeetfield Chardonnay and a few days from picking the 2006," he said.
"We're all ecstatic with this result as it caps off a stellar show season".
This year, 936 wines samples from 37 countries were tasted during the four day competition. More than 300 international expert judges, including 55% from outside France, tasted the wine in accordance with the international wine competition standard and strictly followed quality assurance procedures.
The goal of the international chardonnay competition is to reward the best wines on the basis of their intrinsic quality and after four days of judging, the panels awarded medals to 308, or 33% of the 936 wines entered.
The 2004 Gunn Estate Skeetfield Chardonnay has already gained numerous trophies, gold medals and five star ratings since its release, including Champion Chardonnay, Liquorland Top 100 2005, Best Chardonnay, Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year 2005 and New Zealand International Wine Show 2005.
It is one of four wines in Gunn Estate's top tier reserve range, all of which derive from premium vineyards in the Hawke's Bay and Marlborough wine growing regions. Other wines in the range include Skippers Pool Sauvignon Blanc, Silistria Syrah and Woolshed Bordeaux Blend.
