De Bortoli Wines has been awarded the Australian Wine Company of the Year by Winestate magazine, Australia and New Zealand’s respected wine buying guide. The family-owned wine company founded in 1928, are increasingly recognised for their Yarra Valley and Victorian table wines as well as their New South Wales based wines such as the iconic Noble One first made by Darren De Bortoli in 1982. Chief executive officer Darren De Bortoli said this award capped off a great year for the company. “We produce over 250 different wines for Australian and export markets in a price range from $5 to $90. To find that the company has the highest quality wines amongst our competitors as judged under wine show conditions is a huge vote of confidence for our winemakers, vineyard managers and all the customers who support us. We are incredibly proud that the judges’ opinion confirms the high quality of our whole range of wines.” The annual Winestate Awards follow the blind tasting of more than 10,000 wines by magazine judges during the past 12 months; the largest and most comprehensive tasting of Australian and New Zealand wines in the world. All wines are judged by their actual performance in blind tastings with no preselection based on reputation or price.
Winestate editor/publisher, Peter Simic said: “As we say each year after this tasting, if you have won a major award at a Winestate tasting, you have earned it!” The Australian Wine Company of the Year was given to the most successful exhibitor under one brand name. The finalists included De Bortoli, Yalumba Wine Company, Tyrrell’s, Houghton and Saddler’s Creek. This year’s trophy panel of expert judges consisted of Stephen John (chairman) of Stephen John Wines, John Glaetzer, retired former chief winemaker, Wolf Blass Wines, and Brian Walsh, chief winemaker, Yalumba Wines. De Bortoli is a family-owned New South Wales and Victorian producer. They are Australia’s sixth largest wine company and a proud sponsor of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
