WorkSafe regional transport industry blitz begins this week

Fall protection on trucks and the use of forklifts during loading and unloading operations will be the focus of the campaign which follows five regional deaths in five weeks.

Three of those deaths were related to the transport industry.

WorkSafe inspectors from each of the health and safety regulator’s regional offices will take part in the campaign.

While 18 workplace deaths have been reported to WorkSafe this year, 14 happened in regional Victoria. Of these, six happened during the loading or unloading of vehicles or they involved forklifts. The use of forklifts in vineyard and winery operations is commonplace, especially in warehousing and wine storage situations.

WorkSafe’s Executive Director, John Merritt said the workplace health and safety regulator had been seeking safety improvements in the road transport and related industries for two years.

“The high number of regional deaths is alarming and very much out of proportion with the population. People need to appreciate that when someone is injured in regional workplace incident help may take some time to get there.

“We also know that people hurt at work in regional areas spend more time in hospital because their injuries are more serious.

“Protecting yourself, your workmates and employees must remain the number one priority. Taking shortcuts can lead to disaster.”
