King Valley Vignerons receive farm ready industry grant

A grant of $60,380 has been awarded to the King Valley Vignerons by the Federal Government’s Farm Ready Program for a two year research project.

Called 'On farm demonstration of the adaptations to climate change in vineyards', the project will focus on minimising the effects of increased temperatures and heatwaves, and the reduced availability of water.

The project is seen as particularly relevant with many growers facing on-going water shortage, with unprecedented heat waves having serious negative implications on grape quality, yield levels and subsequent profitability.

The project aims to deliver practical solutions for Australian grapegrowers to help them deal with the impacts of climate change.

The project will build on the results and outcomes of the recently completed National Landcare Program project ‘Sustainable Management of Water and other Natural Resources’ managed by King Valley Vignerons from 2007 – 2009.

Trial sites have been established at various locations throughout the region, encompassing Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties.

Vineyard trials and activities will include:

• Foliage wire management

• Leaf cover and bunch exposure

• Bunch zone temperature monitoring

• Soil moisture monitoring

• Mulching and under-vine grass cover

• Extensive vineyard and wine assessments

• Demonstration site tours

On-farm Demonstration site vineyard trials will compare old and new canopy/ soil water management practices side by side.

Proven methods of vineyard, grape and wine sensory and chemical assessment will be undertaken for samples from old and new practises and published.

The project has the support of several industry and local organisations such as the Grape and Wine Research Development Corporation; Australian Wine Research Institute; Department of Primary Industries, Victoria; Alp Valleys Agribusiness Forum; TAFCO; Alpine Valleys Vignerons and North East Valleys Wine Group.
