The Yalumba Nursery, in conjunction with the Riverland Alternative Wine Group is hosting a workshop on the alternative grape variety Vermentino – an Italian grape variety that shows the potential to excel in warm grape growing conditions.
To be held on December 9 at Reichstein’s Vermentino Vineyard, Renmark, the purpose of the workshop is to review the recent trial work the Yalumba Nursery has undertaken on Vermentino.
Yalumba Nursery technical manager Ashley Ratcliff says there is a lot to learn about its characteristics and how it responds to certain viticultural treatments in a practical sense.
“Early observations suggest this grape variety can adapt to extreme weather conditions, like heatwaves,” he said. “With the current spell of warm weather ensuring we are attuned to the nature of our climate, it is timely that we consider grape varieties like Vermentino and role they could play in the future of the Australia wine industry.”
The Riverland Alternative Wine Group, who ran a seminar on alternative grape varieties in late July this year, have identified Vermentino as one of their six varieties that should flourish in warm grapegrowing conditions.
Places to the workshop are limited to 60 people. For further information, please contact Ashley Ratcliff on 0411 370 057 Registrations
