New Zealand stars sign up for blind week wine auction

Some of New Zealand’s best known and best loved faces are supporting The Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind this month by participating in an auction of Hinton Estate wine.

Dan Carter, Trelise Cooper, Barbara Kendall and the Prime Minister John Key are just some of the famous Kiwis who have signed a bottle of gold medal Hinton Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007 for a Trade Me auction.

The Hinton family have been fruit growers in the Alexandra Basin of Central Otago for 100 years.

For the last 10 years they have also grown grapes and produce a range of award winning wines.

The winemaker, Howie Hinton, and his wife Sarah have three young boys.

Their youngest, Thomas, was born in April last year with no visual acuity.

Sarah explains: “It became apparent to us in the early weeks that he was not making eye contact or looking at things that were in his field of vision.

“This was a very worrying time for us and we were given great support from the services that are provided through the RNZFB.”

Thomas’ vision, along with nystagmus, an involuntary movement of the eye, started developing from around the age of three months and fifteen months on his vision has gone from strength to strength.

The Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind’s annual Blind Week runs from 27th October – 2nd November.

Hinton is listing a case of gold medal Hinton Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007 on Trade Me for the appeal week with all of the money raised from the auction to be donated to the Foundation.

Each bottle has been printed with the names and signed by the following people: Dan Carter, Trelise Cooper, Jeremy Corbett, John Hawkesby, Michael Hill, Mark Inglis, Barbara Kendall, John Key Jools & Lynda Topp, Valerie Vili, Karen Walker, Annabelle White.
