Brookland Valley wins top award at WA Qantas wine show

The Brookland Valley 2008 Chardonnay has won best wine of show at the 32nd Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia.

A fresh face at the Awards this year, 2009 was the first time Brookland Valley has won the award, toppling the run of Houghton Wine Company which received the best wine of show for the last two years, as well as an impressive six trophy wins in each of years 2007 and 2008.

Brookland Valley also won the Portavin trophy for best white wine, providing the Margaret River winery with much to celebrate, while Houghton continued to shine, earning the trophy for the most successful exhibitor overall, as well as the 2009 best red blend trophy for its CW Ferguson Cabernet Malbec 2007.

Other major winners on the evening were Knee Deep Wines, taking out best red wine and best Shiraz for its 2008 vintage, Harewood Estate Wines with most successful exhibitor processing under 250 tonnes for the second year running, and Vasse Felix who received the trophy for the highest aggregate for its three top pointed wines.

Chief Judge Vanya Cullen says WA is blessed with a wonderful vintage.

“The panel of judges were very impressed with the wines submitted in 2009,” she said.

“It was good to see some new winners coming through which highlighted the character and diversity of Western Australia’s wines.”

The 2009 Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia saw a total of 1132 entries assessed from 213 producers across the state.

53 gold medals, 114 silver and 325 bronze were awarded across 41 classes.

Wine enthusiasts have a chance to celebrate and sample the state’s best wines when the Hyatt Regency Perth holds the annual Qantas Wine Show Top 50 Tasting in its Terrace Ballroom on Wednesday 28 October.
