New Zealand boutique wine producer, Steve Bird Wines, has announced his entry into the Australian market after signing a distribution agreement with Waratah Wines. New South Wales based Waratah Wines will distribute Bird wines to Sydney retailers, restaurants and bars.
Bird Wines is the only New Zealand label Waratah Wines represents, other Australian wines they distribute are Bramley Brook, H A L i F A X, Kidman Wines, Millamolong Estate and Warraroong Estate.
Timothy Donelan, owner of Waratah Wines says he only distributes wines of the very best quality. “The wines currently being made in New Zealand are nothing short of outstanding, and Bird wines are the best I’ve tasted. Every one of Steve’s wines is a true expression of varietal flavour. I was impressed with not only the superb Bird wines but also Steve’s can-do attitude, he is a rare winemaker who is willing to put as much time into marketing the wine as he is into making it.”
Recently attending the Australian Boutique Winemakers’ Festival in Sydney, Bird joined their Association and was assisted by their CEO, Judith Kennedy, to find a suitable distributor. Kennedy advises that boutique winemakers may join the association if they produce no more than 250t per year under their own label.
“After attending the festival’s three days of wine tastings, I was convinced there’s a market for rare and intriguing wines. The calibre of wine producers showing confirmed my confidence in the high demand for ultra premium wine in the Australian market,” says Bird.
Bird, who previously spent almost a decade developing the successful Thornbury Vineyards before it was sold to Villa Maria, has been a winemaker for nearly 30 years. Bird wines sell in the United States and Japan and in the immediate future the company’s overseas markets are expanding to include Germany, Singapore, United Kingdom, China and Hong Kong as well as Australia.
Earlier this year he signed an exclusive agreement with Cellar Select/Top Value Liquor Association to distribute Bird wine in New Zealand through their national retail chain which includes nearly 70 wholesalers.
Bird Winery produces four aromatic white varieties, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, along with its flagship red, the Big Barrel Pinot Noir.
