In an address to more than 400 people at the University of California on Thursday 16 July, Dr Richard Smart named Charles Darwin as an early vine physiologist and canopy management researcher.
The year 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, and 150 years since the publication of The Origin of Species.
Smart cited Darwin’s studies into the grapevine as a climbing plant, and his excitement about the grapevine tendril and the inflorescence being homologous organs, one for climbing and one for fruiting, as a perfect example of evolution.
The Davis seminar was to honour the contribution of Dr Mark Kliewer formerly of UCD to canopy management research in that State.
