Dr John Stocker AO has been appointed chair of the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI).
“It is with the full support of the board, and the AWRI team that we announce Dr John Stocker’s appointment as chair,” said Professor Pretorius, managing director of the AWRI, last Friday. “John brings to this appointment a wealth of experience in science and business, and he also has a keen interest in wine production as a grapegrower with vineyards in the Goulburn Valley.”
Dr Stocker’s distinguished career in science and business includes his appointment as chair of CSIRO and chair of Sigma Pharmaceuticals Limited; current directorships with Nufarm Limited and Telstra Corporation Limited; and as principal of Foursight Associates Pty Ltd. John was formerly chief executive of CSIRO and subsequently served three years as the Commonwealth chief scientist. John was appointed Officer in the Order of Australia in 1999 and was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003. The Australian newspaper named him its Australian of the Year in 1992.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr Stocker said, "AWRI has consistently delivered useful research results to the Australian wine industry for more than 50 years and it is a great privilege to have the chance to work with its world class team of scientists. The board will ensure appropriate focus on the opportunities and challenges facing the industry."
