Canberra Riesling chosen for London

Wine Australia’s January 2009 Australia Day Tasting theme of ‘Winemaker’s Choice’, invited six leading Australian wine writers to nominate 20 wines from specified themes, with an aim to demonstrate there is a credible premium to be paid for Australian wine.

Helm Premium Riesling 2008 from the Canberra district, was selected with the top 20 aromatic whites. This wine already has attracted 2 trophies, 2 gold, 3 bronze show awards, plus Gourmet Traveller Wine Dec/Jan 2009 — A Best Buy Wine. Wine writers Huon Hooke and Nick Stock have separately rated it 96 /100.

This is the 4th vintage of the Premium range of Helm Rieslings, a terroir wine from Helm Wines of Murrumbateman and neighbour Al Lustenberger’s vineyard. Only specially-selected fruit is used to create the Premium Riesling, and the wine is only released under the Premium black label if it reaches a quality benchmark. The wine is not released every year.
