Australian Hospitality Industry Gets Top Marks From International Experts

Fine Wine Partners reports over 300 dining establishments entered Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards to be judged by a panel of local and international wine experts and 94% were successful in achieving one, two and three glass ratings. These results were published in a guide to Australia’s best wine lists by Gourmet Traveller WINE, who teamed up with Fine Wine Partners to run the Awards.

Melbourne’s Taxi Dining won Wine List of the Year, but all top candidates were rated as ‘world class’ by the panel of international judges which included acclaimed UK wine commentator, Robert Joseph, US Master Sommelier, Evan Goldstein MS and UK Master Sommelier and CEO of the Court, Brian Julyan MS.

Julyan had a chance to get up close and personal with Australia’s beverage professionals when he and two other Master Sommeliers were hosted here in 2008 by Fine Wine Partners to run their Introductory Sommelier Course and Examination and the Certified Sommelier’s Examination – the first two levels of their four-tiered program necessary to attain the qualification of Master Sommelier.

The Master Sommeliers were impressed with the standard of professionalism and knowledge amongst Australian candidates and with the extremely high pass rate – over 91% passed the Introductory Examination and close to 80% passed the second level to become Certified Sommeliers.

Fine Wine Partners is pleased to announce that both these initiatives will again be offered in 2009. They will launch Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards in February and the Court of Master Sommeliers will return to run their programs in Sydney and Melbourne in September 2009.

Excitingly this year, Fine Wine Partners will also work in partnership with the world’s most respected liquor industry education and qualifications body, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET®) from the UK. They will be introducing key figures from the WSET to Australia’s media, liquor industry and consumers and working with their existing and potential Australian education partners. A National road-show is scheduled for March 2009 and will visit Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
