Grant Burge Wines is again in the headlines today, this time with its 2008 East Argyle Pinot Gris named top of its variety class in The Adelaide Advertiser’s annual Top 100 Wines.
This latest accolade backs up Grant’s recent comments post winning the Top White Wine trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show just a fortnight ago for their Thorn Riesling — he believes Pinot Gris and Riesling will be the champion white wine styles of the future.
“We have been working hard for a number of years on the East Argyle Pinot Gris and I’m thrilled to see that effort come to fruition with recognition like this,” said Grant.
“Both the trophy winning Thorn Riesling and the Pinot Gris are the kind of white wines I would really like to be known for. We are very lucky to have excellent cool climate conditions here in the Barossa and particularly the Eden Valley where fruit for the Pinot Gris and Riesling are grown.”
In announcing Australia’s best 100 wines, The Advertiser gave the East Argyle Pinot Gris 95 points. It was described as having loads of expected varietal pear characters, but with tones of honey, even fresh grated coconut to turn it into something elemental.
“Aromatics are intriguingly exotic, a bit of richness and sweetness adding to its palate weight that remains spot on due to excellent acidity and minerally textures. Assured, classy and exciting.”
Grant says grapes for the East Argyle come from select parcels to produce fruit with the intensity and delicacy required for first-class Pinot Gris.
“The 2008 vintage was very early with just below average rainfall throughout the year and produced exceptional fruit from the cooler climate vineyards, with fresh varietal characters very prominent,” he said.
“The creamy texture and a crisp acid backbone provide great character and length to this wine. It’s a great wine to enjoy in summer – particularly with a spicy Asian stirfry or marinated octopus with Asian greens.”
