Graphic Language Design is an award-winning graphic design business based in Adelaide SA that enjoys specialising in the wine industry.
A recent success includes a silver medal in the wine label design category in July’s San Francisco International Wine Competition, the largest, most influential wine competition in America. Experts judge over 4,240 wines from 1,205 wineries. As there were so many entries, it was wonderful to be awarded a silver medal for label design, and their client who submitted it, Jane Hunter OBE of Hunter’s Wines in NZ’s Marlborough region also received a silver medal for the wine in the Sauvignon Blanc class!
Kudos include numerous awards for the design of Corporate Identity, stationery and websites.
The format of a wine label is small, but the challenge is that it must stand out from the sea of brands, so because of this Diana and her staff see each new project as an exciting blank canvas, with a brief that must be fulfilled to convey strength of identity, price-point, relevance to the export market and it must attract the target demographic. It must also be cost-effective in this competitive climate.
Director, Diana Jaquillard established the business in 1994 as a general commercial design business, but moved towards this specialty when the niche opportunity became apparent. The business also continues to service the food, business and government sector.
Whilst wine labels are a large proportion of the work, all branding aspects are covered to consolidate brand identity. This includes design of anything from corporate identity, brochures, POS items, large trade fair stands, and websites.
Referrals and the internet and targeted advertising have provided most of the contracts within the wine industry and given the business the opportunity to secure contracts from clients in diverse locations.
Many of the firm’s clients are in fact based interstate and internationally, which is expedited by email and new technology. Turnaround time is fast no matter where the client is located, with an excellent service ethic.
The studio is currently developing brands with the international wine & spirits company Diageo and with Champagne Indage Estate Vineyards of India, it’s Riverland company Thachi Wines, as well as ongoing work with it’s London-based arm, Indage UK.
Another major client of Graphic Language Design is Direct Wines UK, which owns Laithwaites, the largest and most successful online wine business in the UK & EU.
Locally, Graphic Language Design also works with businesses as diverse as Hahndorf Hill Winery, The Thinkers in Residence (Department of Premier and Cabinet), Nukorc (wine closures), Hicks Instant Turf, Kingston Estate Wines, Hackney Dental Laboratory, Holdfast Insurance Brokers and SuperGuardian (super fund administration).
