Scarpantoni Estate has won Australia’s most prestigious wine award The 2008 Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge Trophy with its 2006 Scarpantoni Block 3 Shiraz.
Winners were announced at a Gala Black Tie Dinner at the historic Tahbilk Winery on Friday November 7. 368 wines competed in the 14th Challenge with vintages ranging from 2002 to 2008.
Chairman, John Duval said this years event showed more diversity of style and many wines expressed regional and climatic differences.
“The quality of 2004 and 2005 vintages has been well documented however 2006 has produced excellent wines across many regions. Cork closures were down to a historic low of just 26% of entries. The 2008 Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge has once again highlighted the diversity of viticultural regions and the high standard of winemaking related to this iconic Australian grape variety”.
The 2008 Judging panel consisted of John Duval (Chairman), Stephen Henschke, Alan George and Nick Bulleid MW.
Second place was awarded to Vincognita Wines 2006 Vincognita McLaren Vale Shiraz.
