Southern Highlands Regional Wine Show winners

The 5th Southern Highlands Regional Wine Show 2008 results were judged on Thursday 16 October and the Awards presented on Friday evening.

A group of 120 guests filled the magnificent barrel room at Southern Highlands Winery, this years’ venue for the event.

The Award for Best Wine on Show and the Award for Best White wine on show went to Southern Highlands Wines for their 2008 Riesling. This year no Award was handed out for the Best Red, however Tertini Wines received recognition for the Highest Scoring Red wine, their 2006 Reserve Pinot Noir.

Chief Judge Nick Bulleid MW said the results for this year are encouraging and the results reflected the improving quality from this region with an increase in awards given. He noted that the Southern Highlands continues to succeed with varieties that perform well in cooler climates, such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

There were close to 100 entries received for judging this year, and wines in the white categories were especially strong. Only wines from the Southern Highlands GI (Geographical Indicator) were judged in this competition. The quality and number of entries received has moved closer to the national industry average, with 39 awards given out of 100 entries. 4 Gold Medals were awarded, 4 silver and 31 Bronze.

Members of the Trade and Exhibitors were treated to a private tasting of all the wines on show on the Friday morning. Over 50 guests visited the tasting room and had a chance to taste the wines and choose wines to stock at their outlets.

Numbers for the Public tasting trebled this year. Linda Lambrechts, Marketing Co-Cordinator for Southern Highlands Food and Wine Association, reported that over 100 members of the public both local and from other areas, filled the tasting room on Saturday morning. Mrs Lambrechts says both the Public and Trade Tastings are an essential part of the Regional wine show, as it gives gave interested wine buyers a chance to look at the wide range of wines available in the Southern Highlands and to familiarize themselves with wines never tasted before.
