Porongurup Winery clients clean up at 2005 Qantas Wine Show

Porongurup Winery is celebrating after its clients collected 17 medals at the 2005 Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia, Mt Barker – one of Western Australia’s most esteemed wine shows.

The winery’s clients won two gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals, with the most prestigious award being the Trophy for the best Shiraz, which was won by the 2004 Xabregas Show Reserve Shiraz.

It’s the second time in three years the winery has produced the winner of this Trophy, with the 2002 WJ Walker Lake Grace Shiraz picking up the award in 2003.

The 2004 Xabregas Show Reserve Shiraz won from a competitive field of 157 wines, submitted from the 2003 and 2004 vintages.

It was made from grapes grown from the Turloch vineyards in Narrikup, south of Mt Barker. The grapes were fermented in the Italian designed Ganimede Fermenters, which make use of the natural carbon dioxide produced during fermentation to pump the juice over the cap of skins. This produces a deeper colour and a wine that has soft, velvety tannins and excellent primary fruit characters.

The winery is excited about the prospects for the production of all its red wines using these fermenters.

Xabregas continued its success at the show with the 2004 Show Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon winning a silver medal, the 2004 Xabregas Cabernet Merlot and 2005 Xabregas Unwooded Chardonnay both winning bronze medals.

Since the results were announced, demand for the award winning reds has been overwhelming and Xabregas Wines have now set an earlier release date, from March 2006 to October 2005.

Xabregas wines have been invited to feature the award winning reds at the ‘SIMEI’ Milan Fair in Italy and will also enter the 2004 Xabregas Show Reserve Shiraz in the Vintage Cellars National Wine Show of Australia in November this year.

Dr Diane Miller, winemaker at Porongurup Winery was thrilled with the awards and congratulated the vineyard and winery staff and major shareholders Terry Hogan and Eve Broadley from Xabregas Wines.

"We are delighted to receive recognition through these awards. We all knew we were working towards a common goal, but no-one predicted it would pay off so soon. “

Besides major shareholder Xabregas wines, other successful vineyards included shareholders Chatsfield, Ironwood Estate and Jingalla, as well as clients Dukes in the Porongurups, Bellarmine Estate and Hidden River in Pemberton, Across the Lake and WJ Walker both of Lake Grace.

Porongurup Winery Premium Winemakers is located on Porongurup Road between the Porongurup and Stirling Ranges 20km east of Mt Barker. The winery processes 650 tonnes each vintage for its five shareholders and several contract clients. It has the infrastructure to expand to 1000 tonnes over the next few years.
