Sue Hodder, senior winemaker at Wynns, along with John Ellis, winemaker Hanging Rock, and Ben Moechtar, chair of the Australian Sommeliers Association and Sydney Restaurateur announced Chardonnay as the stand out class at the 2008 Clear Image Orange Region Wine Show judged in Orange.
“The number of gold medals awarded in the chardonnay category was extraordinary” said John Ellis during the feedback session that took place with the vignerons this morning at the Orange Showground. “The judges have been impressed with how well run the show has been and how good it has been to judge wines in a region with so much coming together. There have been some real highlights.”
2006 Brangayne of Orange Isolde Reserve Chardonnay made by David Hoskins won three awards including the Spiegelau Trophy for Best Chardonnay of Show, the NAB Trophy for Best White Wine of Show, and the Clear Image Trophy for Best Wine of Show. “This superb wine has finely balanced varietal character redolent of quince and carefully used oak and palate complexity” said John Ellis.
The judges also awarded the Special Trophy for Regional Excellence, sponsored by Orange Cool Stores, to Murray Smith and his 2005 Canobolas Smith Wines Chardonnay.
Sue Hodder, Chief Judge, said that she wanted to make this award as she felt that this was the style and quality of wine that is a perfect example of a regional champion. John Ellis said of the 2005 Canobolas Smith Wines Chardonnay that it has “An excellent toasty and toffee fruit driven nose. The palate has brilliant balance of oak and varietal characteristics and cleansing acidity”.
The other classes of note were Shiraz (Best Shiraz of Show Trophy sponsored by Gregoire Vinestar) won by the 2005 Dindima Wines Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon (Best Cabernet Sauvignon of Show Trophy sponsored by the Central Western Daily) won by the 2006 Millamolong Estate 4 Horsemen Cabernet Sauvignon.
John Ellis said of the 2005 Dindima Wines Shiraz that it is a “Mature wine showing rich ripe developed chocolate characters. It has a soft palate with a clean long persistent flavour”. Of the Millamolong Estate 4 Horsemen Cabernet Sauvignon that it is a “Generous soft fruit driven wine with briary complexity and excellent length and balance”.
