John Angove, the managing director and chairman of Angove’s Winery, was named Riverland Winemaker of the Year 2005 on 14 October.
The prestigious award was presented to Mr Angove at the Riverland Wine Show Society Dinner held at The Berri Hotel in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the local wine industry.
After completing his studies in Adelaide and working in the wine industry overseas, John joined his Renmark-based family business as the fourth generation representative, taking on responsibility for sales and promotion in 1972.
In 1983, following the retirement of his father, John became managing director and turned his focus to ensuring Angove’s produced the best possible value for money wine.
John is leading an ambitious redevelopment of Angove’s Nanya vineyard and has overseen the winery’s transformation from an ageing production facility to one that can cope with strict modern quality requirements including the recent opening of a new world class bottling facility.
John has been an executive councillor of the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia since its inception in 1989, and through his hard work and passion for the industry has attracted global recognition for the Riverland and its wines.
