Nominations are open for Young Winemaker of the Year Award

Nominations for The Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year Award 2008 are now open! Since its inception in 2001, the Award has steadfastly pursued its mission of recognising and celebrating the wine industry’s prodigious youth.

In 2007, the Awards extended across the Tasman for the first time to include the prodigies of New Zealand’s winescape. This decision proved incredibly successful and The Wine Society would again like to welcome nominations from all winemakers in Australia and New Zealand aged 30 years or younger who are principally responsible for the wines they create.

In order to make this a fitting trans-Tasman challenge, nominations must consist of wines from a single nation, Australia or New Zealand, according to each winemaker’s nation of choice.

All wines submitted to the Society Tasting Panel are judged according to the Australian Show Judging System. The 2 best wines from each winemaker will be counted to decide the 10 finalists.

The finalists’ 2 best wines are then sent to the Final Selection Panel, a selection of iconic industry professionals, who will judge the wines once more to decide the winner.

Meanwhile the same wines that the Final Selection Panel assess will be judged by over 500 Wine Society Members at a series of events throughout October to decide the Members’ Choice winner, now in its 5th year. In addition, these wines will also be tasted by some of Australia′s best Sommeliers, to determine the Sommeliers Choice Award — another initiative of last year′s event.

Nominations close on Friday, 29 August 2008 – the 10 finalists will be notified mid September.

The Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year, Members’ Choice and Sommeliers’ Choice Award winners will be announced at a black-tie dinner in Sydney on Saturday, 1 November 2008 at which all 10 finalists will be present.
