Qantas Wine Show Committee wins the 2008 Ian Tyrer Award

More than 220 people attended the annual Mount Barker Wine Producers Association dinner last month, held at Fraser’s Restaurant, Kings Park, Perth. The very best food from the Mount Barker region was on offer, as was a magnificent range of wines from Mount Barker.

The main award for the evening was the Ian Tyer Award, which this year, was awarded to the Qantas Wine Show Committee. The Ian Tyrer Award is in recognition for the support and/or promoting the Mount Barker Wine Industry.

Bev Gilbert, a long standing committee member, accepted the award and made special thanks to Tony Smith who wished to especially thank Pam McGregor. Pam was the original secretary and had worked very hard over many years setting up the show to be the success it is today.

The prize is an imperial bottle (six litres of 2002 Galafrey Cabernet Sauvignon). Special thanks went to the Visy Board who made the special presentation box and Supa Stik Labels who printed the label for the bottle.

The Mount Barker Wine Producers Association congratulate Qantas Wine Show Committee on winning this well deserved award, and believe it was nice to give some of our locals who volunteer their time to this massive task, a ‘good pat on the back’.

Mount Barker Wine Show first started in 1978 as part of the Mount Barker Agricultural Show. There were 30 entries, one gold and 16 silvers and bronzes medals were awarded, so obviously the judges were very generous. From these humble beginnings, the show has become part of the national wine circuit, has thousands of entries, and international judges, giving Mount Barker and the Mount Barker Wine Industry a national recognition.
