Nugan Estate sticky takes home regional trophy for Best Australian Sweet Wine!

Family-owned Australian winery, Nugan Estate has been awarded the Regional Trophy for the Best Australian Sweet Wine Over £10 for its 2006 Nugan Estate Riverina Botrytis Semillon at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards in London.

One of only 97 wines to win a regional trophy out of the 9,219 entries, the award winning dessert wine now goes forward to compete against all other regional trophy winners for the International trophy, which will be announced at the Presentation Dinner, on 1 September 2008 in London.

This is the second time Nugan Estate is in running for the Best International Dessert Wine in its price-point, having won the trophy for the Best International Sweet Wine Under ₤10 with its 2005 Cookoothama Botrytis Semillon RRP $22.95.

An ecstatic chief winemaker, Daren Owers, commented: “This trophy is an amazing achievement! It’s an endorsement of what we believe at Nugan Estate – the Riverina in NSW, Australia, truly deserves a position on the world stage as a premium producer of dessert wine. We hope the Nugan Estate Botrytis Semillon will become a benchmark of its style. I am extremely proud of our whole team.”

Now in its fifth year, the Decanter World Wine Awards is one of the largest international competitions with more than 9,000 entries. It is also one of the most revered, boasting a panel of highly respected, international judges, presided over by Chairman Steven Spurrier.

Decanter's reputation for its unique judging process has often caused the competition to be called 'the ultimate terroir competition'. This year the judges, over 50 of whom flew in from overseas, were as rigorous as ever.
