At the London International Wine Fair today, the Decanter World Wine Awards announced that the Helm Wines Premium Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 was awarded a silver medal. A very prestigious win for the small Canberra winery, who till now were only known for their quality Rieslings.
The Decanter World Wine Awards claim to identify the world's greatest wines, judged by the most respected wine experts in the industry. The Awards attract over 4000 entries which are judged by over 100 judges from around the world.
Helm Wines at Murrumbateman in the Canberra District have been successfully making Cabernet sauvignon wines since 1979. However, a trip to Bordeaux Premium Growth wineries in 1999, by winemaker Ken Helm, with son Matthew and grape growing neighbour Al Lustenberger, is when they developed the recipe to make premium Cabernets in the Canberra District. The 2005 vintage is the first release, using all the techniques of vine management and winemaking learnt in Bordeaux.
