Tasmanian wine list award launched

Wine Tasmania and the Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) have partnered again to recognise and reward Tasmanian venues that support the local wine sector.

Now in its second year, the Tasmanian Wine List of the Year Award was launched recently as part of the THA’s 2015 TasTAFE Awards for Excellence.

Sheralee Davies, Wine Tasmania chief executive officer, said the Tasmanian Wine List of the Year Award aimed to both recognise and encourage licensed premises to feature the island’s outstanding wines as part of their overall offering.

“Tasmania’s wines are continuing to attract attention right around the world for their quality, and more and more people are visiting Tasmania motivated by our outstanding wine, food and other beverages,” Davies said. “Promoting local wines reflects the justifiable pride we have in the island’s talented wine producers.”

Davies said there was a strong interest in last year’s inaugural awards, with eight venues shortlisted.

“The Tasmanian Wine List of the Year Judges will select their winning venue as well as a number of finalists. Finalists will then be widely promoted, with members of the public encouraged to visit the finalist venues and vote for their favourite to be awarded the People’s Choice,” she said.

Steve Old, Tasmania Hospitality Association general manager, said wine is an integral part of the hospitality experience.

“We are very excited to be collaborating with Wine Tasmania once again on this prestigious addition to our Awards for Excellence,” he said. “We want to recognise and commend venues supporting the local Tasmanian wine sector.”

The Tasmanian Wine List of the Year Award examines the wine offering of licensed venues, with Tasmanian wines to represent at least a third of wines offered by the glass. Applicants are also asked about any features of their wine list, such as the depth and diversity of the Tasmanian wine offering, and any staff training or education programs that support wine knowledge and professional service.

Nominations for the 2015 Tasmanian Wine List are invited before 15 May 2015. The nomination details and online applications are available on the THA website at http://australianhotels.asn.au/events/awards/.
