Australia Business Week in India identifies emerging opportunities for wine

Australia Business Week in India (ABWI), Australia’s largest ever trade mission to India, has been an important opportunity for Australian wine representatives to meet with Indian trade and media to showcase their wine through tasting events as well as explore emerging market opportunities.

In 2014, Australia exported approximately one million litres of wine to India valued at $A3.7 million. While this is a relatively small component of Australia’s total exports, this was an increase of 27 per cent by volume and 24 per cent by value year-on-year, demonstrating the tremendous potential of the Indian wine market.

To put this growth in perspective, in 2014 Australia exported to 121 countries and India ranked 13th in absolute value growth and 16th in absolute volume growth.

Wine Australia’s Stuart Barclay, general manager of market development, who travelled to India as part of the mission, was encouraged by the opportunities the Indian market presents for Australian wine following the very positive response received from local trade and media to the mission.

“All week, I saw people really enjoying the wines they tasted and wanting to learn more about Australian wine. Our wines are exciting for a market like India where consumers are just starting to explore wine and discover what they like, because there really is no such thing as a typical Aussie wine. We have 65 wine regions and each of those regions has its own expression and is becoming known for its champion varieties.”

Barclay said while the market may be small today and not the easiest to export to while current tariffs are among the highest in the world, the growth in exports to India is an indicator of how quickly the market is developing.

“Wine Australia will be exploring new opportunities to show local consumers the depth and breadth of Australian wine,” he said.

As part of the trade mission’s Premium Food and Beverage Program, Wine Australia partnered with Austrade and international consultants Group Ritu in hosting Australian Wine Tasting events in New Delhi, on Monday 12 January and Mumbai, Wednesday 14 January. Wines included in the tasting events were from regions such as the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Strathbogie Ranges and New England.
