The first Sustainability Report issued by Corticeira Amorim — the world’s leading cork producer — has won a prestigious commendation in the global CR Reporting Awards 2007.
Developed by CorporateRegister.com, the CR (corporate responsibility) Reporting Awards featured 300 companies from 40 countries representing 39 different business areas. Winners in nine separate categories were announced in Berlin in early March.
In the ‘Openness and Honesty’ category, a sector that lies at the heart of sustainability issues, Amorim’s entry was distinguished as one of the world’s top three.
According to CorporateRegister.com: “It is often difficult to assess the truth. This distinction is awarded to the clearest reports, which convince us of the true realities existing within each company.”
Commenting on the news, Carlos de Jesus, Amorim’s director of marketing & communications, said: “We are very proud to receive such international recognition for the transparency and honesty of our sustainability policies.
“We feel it is important to evaluate both our environmental and social impact on a regular basis, ensuring that we are doing everything possible to maximise the unique advantages natural cork has in these crucial areas.
“This commendation provides added motivation to continue the work we are undertaking with our stakeholders in the wine industry.” Corticeira Amorim’s third placing in the ‘Openness & Honesty’ category was behind corporate giants Bayer AG and Nike Inc.
The company was also well regarded in the category that acknowledges the ‘Best First Time Report’ with a fifth placing and finished in sixth place from 167 entries for the ‘Relevance and Materiality’ of its Sustainability Report.
CorporateRegister.com is the world’s largest on-line directory of corporate responsibility and sustainability reports. Over 2000 companies presenting reports in the period September 2006 to September 2007 were invited to participate in the awards.
Corticeira Amorim released its first Sustainability Report in August last year, outlining the company's sustainable development policies and performance, as well as social responsibility and related corporate activities.
The report highlighted the fact that cork oak forests and the natural cork products derived from the forests are a major carbon sink and have an important role in sustainable development.
