Imagine sitting above Merewether Beach, listening to the sounds of Bella and other local artists, sipping a Hunter Chardonnay as the last surfer of the day leaves the water, this dream is a reality with the 2nd Annual Wine & Waves Festival being held in conjunction with Surfest, on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 April at Merewether Beach.
Taking place over the Finals weekend of the Surfest competition, Wine & Waves will include live music and market stalls, together with fantastic local restaurants and wineries offering their wares, all against the vista of the region’s best beach. The kids won’t be forgotten, with a special children’s zone adjacent to the licensed festival area.
“Wine & Waves is a unique and sophisticated opportunity to take in the excitement of Surfest, while enjoying the Hunter’s finest food and wines and we are very excited to be bringing it back to Merewether this year,” said Warren Smith, Surfest organiser and Newcastle City Council’s Australian of the Year.
The event is a part of the nation’s largest surfing competition, Surfest, which draws thousands of beach enthusiasts to Merewether and the local surrounds.
“Wine and Waves will complement the fantastic competition and spectacle of Surfest with the beauty of Merewether beach. The food and wine fair concept was created to provide an opportunity for the local community to enjoy high quality local products, whilst at the same time providing people with a great weekend of entertainment,” Smith said.
The festival commences on Saturday 5th April at 10.30am with an enormous kid’s zone, on-stage family entertainment, market stalls and food and wine stalls. Performances on stage will include; on the rise singer/songwriter, Nathan Eshman, and Inside Out, with an evening performance from the sensational Bella to complete a great day of entertainment.
The food and wine fair and kids zone will again be in operation on Sunday 6th April from 10am to 4pm. Entertainment on Sunday will include performances from local artists, The Clayto’s, Matt Purcell on and Ashleigh Mannix among others.
“Wine and Waves is the perfect way to spend a weekend, enjoying some of the Hunter’s best drops and finest fare, overlooking Merewether Beach, the host of the world renowned Surfest competition. We encourage all members of the community, not just surfing enthusiasts, to come along and experience the most unique Food and Wine Fair ever held in the inner city,” Smith said.
