A win for the Wine & Viticulture Journal

The 2014 Wine Communicator Awards, presented by the Wine Communicators of Australia, was held Wednesday night at Four Seasons in Sydney.

Three of the five finalists nominated for best wine trade or technical writer have a strong ties with the Wine & Viticulture Journal, including editor Sonya Logan and contributors Anthony Hoare and Cathy Howard.

After much deliberation, Howard, who also contributes to Grapegrower & Winemaker, received the award.

Howard’s articles draw on her experience as a practical, hands-on winemaker and small wine business owner.

Often time-poor and all too aware of how difficult it is to keep up with new and exciting trends happening within Australia’s research facilities and across many vineyards and wineries, Howard writes her articles with a blend of technical information as well as seeking out comments and input from fellow winemakers, vineyard managers, viticulturists and suppliers.

The judges commended Howard’s writing efforts, stating “she is able to combine the expert experience of a winemaker with some strong journalism skills – an uncommon achievement”.

Logan, who has worked as a journalist and editor under the Ryan Publications and Winetitles banner for more than 20 years, said she was proud to say she was nominated for the award and even prouder that two of the other nominees who were shortlisted for the award were long-time writers for the magazine.

“I’ve heard many a people in the running for awards say how it is an honour just be nominated, but always felt that this was a just a way of hedging their bets publicly should they not win,” she said.

“However, now that I’ve become a nominee myself, I can honestly say that, at least for me, it truly has been an honour and a much-appreciated pat-on-the-back for the work I’ve done over the last 20 years on this magazine, its predecessors the Wine Industry Journal and Australian Viticulture, and the Grapegrower & Winemaker magazine before that.”

She said she was thrilled with Howard’s win which she’s claimed as a “win for me by proxy”.

“Well, more specifically, a win for this journal and due acknowledgement for the quality of the articles that she brings to the publication," Logan said.

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners of the 2014 Wine Communicator Awards!
